AI & Art - Is it Intelligence or Insanity?
Is it the start of an Art revolution or the end of human creativity?
In this episode Phoebe and Julie have a brief chat about their lives and art; Julie is overcoming sickness, running out of paint and still searching for pliers, and Phoebe is going cross eyed painting over squares, using chatGPT to help her with dinner ideas and is excited by seeing how many people are using the #flaapfreinds hashtag.
Then they open the can of worms that is AI in art. They discuss this rapidly evolving new technology and its impact in the art world. And what a messy can of worms it is! They acknowledge that with this landscape changing so rapidly, the information they share may well be out of date very quickly. They try to keep the conversation neutral however it does occasionally swerve into their own personal opinions…
They (do their best to) answer listener questions about the use of AI in art and also the concerns over copyright, how AI image generators collect their data via ‘scraping’ and the potential risks this poses to artists. Also what impact the use of AI might have to those artists who create digital or graphic design work. They acknowledge that AI can have many benefits to artists such as short cutting some mundane creative processes, or how easy it can be to create ‘original’ source images, and how text AI generators can help those who struggle with writing. They also touch on the ethical and environmental implications around AI and talk about the need for development of regulations around the creation of AI art.
We may or may not end the show with Phoebe rapping a “Fail Like An Artist” rap created by ChatGPT…

Quotes:
“By far, the greatest danger of Artificial Intelligence is that people conclude too early that they understand it.”—Eliezer Yudkowsky
“(AI generated art) is the exact opposite of what I believe art to be. Fundamentally, I have always felt that art is all about translating something that you feel internally into something that exists externally…And simply pressing a button to generate an image is not a creative process.” - Rob Biddulph

AI & Art - Is it Intelligence or Insanity?
This episode on AI was a great insight into this world of which I know absolutely nothing. I learnt a new word “scraping!” Who knew! Certainly I shall have to now go digging around to see if any of my work has been reinvented. I think potentially the scariest thing is that for well over ten years now everything I have ever posted is fair game! How is that okay!
