Show Notes:
We hate shipping, but it’s one of those things we both need to do, so join us to learn from our fails, but also our tips and tricks. We cover shipping fails like not charging enough, taxes and duties for international packages and damaged shipments. We answer some listener questions about how to package and send larger works, using recycled materials, how to package prints and end the episode with some great tips from our listeners!

Claire Te Au’s solo show:
Aftership : You can use aftership to track your parcels across countries,(and find out when they get stuck in customs. Aftership does have paid sections- JB has only ever used the free areas and it’s been great.
Duties and Taxes : Simply Duty - There are a few of these websites around, this one lets you use it for free 5 times a day and covers quite a few counties.
Paccabag: Australian made reusable art packaging
Fed Ex : will pick up from your door, pretty quick delivery (a little spensy though) .
PackSend : This is the link to the NZ site- but they are available in various locations
Museumpak art shipping boxes in the UK
Frames by Daniel : NZ Made art freight boxes (pictured below)
Just a note to say we’re not sponsored by any of these companies/people, it is just who we have used/heard about!
Fails Tips and Tricks from:
Process tips:
Put acid Free paper on the face of the artwork
Bubble wrap the piece (twice)
Reinforce corners
Put flat cardboard over face of the artwork
Wrap in a Blanket/sheet (If you’re overdoing it and being super cautious)
Do some Cardboard surgery to create a custom sized box for your art
Tape, tape,tape
Other Shipping Tips & Advice:
If you’re rolling - Roll your Artwork with the paint side down, and roll with the painting facing outwards so that the paint stretches rather then creases.
Internationally we generally wouldn’t send greater then 60cm framed. If the client was insisting, we’d be looking into a specialised art freight box like made byFrames by Daniel
Make sure there isn’t any space in your tube or box for the artwork to rattle around in- fill it with bubble wrap or other
Ask a local framer for old tubes
Check out facebook marketplace for local groups where you can ask for card/bubblewrap
Cover any old shipping labels if you’re using recycled supplies!
Write a thank you note (and put it inside the package)
For larger boxes- try searching for moxes made for moving/storing mirror
Pizza boxes make great small boxes
Glasseine paper- every work is different- check out if your work needs glasseine paper or if you could use a less expensive acid free tissue or baking paper instead.
If you’re producing prints, could you printer drop ship for you and remove the pain of shipping altogether?
Take a picture of the packaged item with the shipping details and send this to your client to reassure buyer that the item was sent
Add a little artwork as an extra surprise/ thank you with your work
Buy your canvases online and use the same packaging to send them out in
Befriend your local post person!

What is going on in our weeks!
What is going on in the studio:
PG: Finished a 60x60 cm one and started another…
JB: Throwing myself into starting lots of things
What is going on in your life this week?
Celebrating international women’s day with my favourite little lady.
Watched the full moon rise… feeling all the full moon energy in my house!! 😳
JB: lots of parenting this weekend, when I wasn’t freaking out about planning a solo show. managed to sneak in some studio time too though with this little guy.
also. this is still happening. they’re attracted to the studio lights at night. it’s pretty creepy.
What are you reading/watching?
PG: Not reading anything, I need a new book! But I’m watching “Strike” a British tv series adaptation of the books, I’m actually a bit obsessed with it (I rarely watch tv but when I do it’s British tv via a VPN!)
JB: I’m re-reading some old books while I’ve been feeding lately- just re read “ The Museum of Modern Love” - 100% not as trashy as the title sounds. It’s beautifully written and tells the story of a couple in New York and weaves in some stories about Marina Abramovic’s ‘The Artist is Present’. If you’re like me and enjoy a good novel, and also don’t really understand modern performance art, this book is great for both. Loved it just as much the second time around.
What are you listening to??
PG: Just started Rick Rubins ‘The creative act’ on audible.
JB: I’ve been listening to “Bang on” a weekly music & life podcast , would definitely appeal to anyone who grew up in Aus in the 90’s (eek!)
Fav art product this week?
PG: This week I’m using a lot of paper towels!!
JB: I’ve been burning through some ‘ low toxic underpainting medium’ from Langridge.
Meme of the week?
Anything Random to share?
PG: I feel like these corn sum up me abd Julie pretty accurately 😂
JB: I feel like phoebe’s is random enough for both of us.
Any Fails this week?
