Odd socks, crocks and the importance of art friends
Self doubt and the importance of studio buddies
Howdy Doody!
As an artist, experiencing self-doubt and loneliness is inevitable, especially since many of us tend to work alone. In this episode, Julie shares her struggles with self-doubt and exhibition worries, & how she overcame a recent experience of the 'comparison trap' with the help of her art friends. Phoebe expresses concern that Julie is working too hard (does she ever sleep?) shares some exciting news about her crocs*, and discusses her own current struggle with her work being stuck in the 'messy middle' stage. They also discuss they divided opinion of “should socks match” and introduce The Fail Scale - where are they at this week? If 1 is “whoops I spilled my paint water” and 10 is “whoops I burned down my studio”??

The conversation then shifts to the importance of having 'studio buddies' and how having an artist friend to talk to can help us overcome difficult moments more easily. If you are seeking a studio bestie, you can use the hashtag #FLAAPfriends in your posts or stories to let other artists know that you are open to connecting with someone. Remember that it's not necessary to meet up or even be in the same country - virtual support buddies can be just as valuable as in-person friends!

“Announce your vision, your request to the universe, work towards it and it will come to life. Never be afraid of aiming high. I’m a firm believer in “ask and you shall receive”, combine that with willing it to being and anything is possible. Dreams can come true.” – Jim Carrey

Quotes
“Sometimes you gotta create what you want to be a part of.” - Geri Weitzman
From the article on AI ‘ The problem of photography is not the Medium, it’s the Message’ : “Musician Nick Cave had a thing to say about AI in his Red Hand Files newsletter. A fan sent Cave a ChatGPT AI song written in the style of Nick Cave and asked for his thoughts. Cave didn’t disappoint”
This song is bullshit, a grotesque mockery of what it is to be human...What makes a great song great is not its close resemblance to a recognizable work. Writing a good song is not mimicry, or replication, or pastiche, it is the opposite. It is an act of self-murder that destroys all one has strived to produce in the past.”
