When Failure Leads to Art Opportunities with Laura Horn
Pivoting from failure to success, and thriving without social media.
Well what an exciting episode - for the first time we have a co-host on the pod, the wonderful Laura Horn! We had a lovely relaxed chat with Laura, who is such an easygoing person full of so much knowlege and art biz wisdom.
We ask Laura where she is on the Fail Scale, and chat to her about why she hasn’t released an episode of her own podcast ‘The Laura Horn Art Podcast’ in almost a year. She reveals to us her biggest failure - and how that inspired a big change of focus that lead to a very successful but different type of revenue from art. We chat about how she has managed to step away from social media but still have her art business thrive, and her plans for her new art and recording cottage studio!
Thank you so much Laura! xx

This week…
Studio updates:
PG: Just lots of packing up prints! Grateful for everyone who supported me when my cat pixiedust was hit by a car xx
JB: inside set up this week
LH: I recently moved into a new studio, which is just a few minutes' drive from my home. It's been an absolute dream come true, but, to be honest, I've been so busy renovating and organising that I haven't had much time to paint! This week, after my podcast interview I felt fired up (thank you Phoebe and Julie ) so I pulled out my gelli plate. Making collage papers is one of my go-to activities for getting my art mojo back. I had so much fun! I'm not yet sure how I'll use these papers, but I'm hoping to incorporate some of them into my large abstract paintings.
Life Update:
PG: Feeling under the weather tbh, my kids have all been hit with winter bugs and I’m just trying not to get covid again. Really appreciate the winter sun when it makes an appearance 🌞
JB: Alfie is crawling!
LH: I feel incredibly blessed to finally have a dedicated studio space. One of the major perks for me is that it is surrounded by beautiful cottage gardens with veggies and fruit trees. Even in Winter, the garden is full of life. It's such a beautiful environment to work in. I keep pinching myself, as it doesn’t seem real.
What are you reading / Watching?
PG: Finished watching The Long Call which was set where I grew up, didn’t live the series that much but did live the scenery and spotting all the familiar towns and landscapes. Also enjoying “Lazy Susan” a British comedy series.
JB: I’ve been watching “The Katering show” this week because I needed a giggle
LH:At the moment, I'm carrying a book around with me more than I'm actually reading it. The book is called "Love and Other Battles" by the Australian author Tess Woods. I need to get back into my 10-minute daily reading habit. It’s one of my favourite self-care habits.
What are you listening to?
PG: Enjoying Nobody Panic podcast and also listening to Ask An Artist.
JB: I’ve been getting into “The Design Files Talks” Podcast this week
LH:Well, funny that you asked! Lately, I’ve been listening to "Fail Like an Artist". Phoebe and Julie are the art friends I need in my life. Another podcast I love is “How to Fail with Elizabeth Day”. Hmm, it seems to be a theme. I must like hearing about failures!
Fab meme of the week
PG: lol 🙈

:
Fave Art product of the week?
PG: Fragile art tape. Might need to start sticking it on myself 😂🫠
JB: Langridge Quinacidrone Crimson oil colour
LH: My favorite art product has to be Daniel Smith watercolor paints. While I also paint in acrylics, the easy clean-up and limited space needed for watercolours have helped me stay creative over the years, even when life has been super busy.
